Neighbourhood Watch in Mid Sussex - details on how to start a scheme

Is your road covered?  Click for a list of roads where an NHW scheme is in operation in Hassocks.

Thank you for your interest in Neighbourhood Watch.  We have some 500 schemes in Mid Sussex covering homes in urban and rural areas, some schemes consist of just six homes whilst others have members from over 100 properties.  Schemes are owned by the members and, as such, operate to serve that membership through their Coordinator.  All schemes aim to maintain and improve the safety of their community.

There are just a few simple steps you need to follow in establishing a scheme:

  1. Identify the group of homes that form a cohesive community group, 20 to 30 is recommended.

  2. Make an appointment for the local Police Community Support Officer/Main Coordinator to attend a meeting to 'set-up' the scheme; local crime and related crime prevention measures will be discussed.

  3. Visit the neighbours and discuss the viability of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.  This website gives some ideas on the operation of NHW.

  4. Identify a Coordinator who will be willing to be the group's main link with the Main Coordinator, local PCSO and Sussex Police.  The Coordinator will also be asked to arrange dissemination of information throughout the group.

Burglars beware!
Hassocks is a Neighbourhood Watch area.

It is important to note that Sussex Police value all of their Neighbourhood Watch Schemes, some coordinators have limited time and resources and thus may simply distribute urgent crime messages.  At the other end of the scale we have schemes where coordinators write newsletters, participate in and run meetings of local groups and support local websites.

Here in Mid Sussex we live in a low crime area, many offences can be avoided by prudent crime prevention measures.  By keeping abreast of local crime, members are more alert to their own security needs.  The group will be encouraged to maintain security at all levels from being vigilant to marking property, from planting prickly perimeters to installing suitable locks.

Thanks for your interest in the safety of your community.
