Further thefts have occurred in our town centres, with thieves targeting
open bags and bags left unattended. As it only takes a few moments to grab a
purse, please ensure you keep your bag securely closed and with you at all
times. Be aware of anyone bumping into you 'accidentally', this could be a
distraction tactic. [14-05-08]

Garage and Outbuildings Thefts
There has been a large surge in mower and garden tool thefts across the
district in recent weeks with offences in Horsham, Haywards Heath, Ardingly,
Burgess Hill, Crawley, West Grinstead and Cuckfield. Chain items together
and link to eye bolts cemented in the ground. Visibly security mark mowers
and tools with a postcode and house number or first two letters of your
house name, or deface them by painting them an outrageous colour! Record
serial numbers and take a digital photo, if the worst happens it may help
your insurance claim. Click this item for more advice... [12-05-08]

Rave Season
A large rural rave in West Sussex was thwarted over the May Bank Holiday
weekend thanks to a prompt telephone call to Sussex Police. If you own land
that may be attractive to illegal rave organisers, please consider
additional measures that would frustrate vehicle access and make the set-up
of these much more difficult. If you see vehicles that may be used to carry
rave equipment accessing remote locations, especially on the South Downs,
please call the police immediately. Raves are often very difficult to close
down once established. [09-05-08]

Cold Callers in Mid Sussex
Cold callers have been reported calling on Bolney and West Chiltington
residents, as they always move on it's quite likely they could target other
local areas soon. A male caller has been claiming to be a dealer in books,
silver clocks, paintings, china, jewellery and watches. Aged 65-70, darkly
suited with fine receding grey hair, medium/stocky build, wearing a horse
shoe shaped gold ring with diamond centre, a further a ring on his little
finger and gold neck chain with crucifix. He didn't leave any leaflets and
there's no vehicle description. If offered a 'price' for goods it's usually
nowhere near its true value - seek an expert opinion, also check with
family/friends before parting with anything. If a batch of items is worth
£25 to them you can be sure that just one item will be worth a lot more to
you. Tarmaccers have again been cold calling offering to do the drive with
'some spare tarmac', a dark blue saloon vehicle was seen. Always ask for ID.
When checking a company use the number listed in the phone book or website,
not that given. Better not to deal at the door. Call with any suspicions on
0845 60 70 999 or Trading Standards 08454 040 506. [28-08-07]
