Since the Freedom
of Information act was introduced, the public are now able to access
detailed crime statistics for their local area for the first time.
Looking at the statistics for Hassocks for the period 2005-06 reveals that
this area is, indeed, a low crime area. Hurstpierpoint and Ditchling
both show a higher crime level (Ditchling records a high drug crime rate
for instance), but still low by comparison with the three main Mid Sussex
towns of East Grinstead, Haywards heath and Burgess Hill which in turn are
low compared with the major coastal towns (Worthing, Brighton,
Eastbourne).
The
Argus run a crime stats portal where three tables giving crime
statistics by Sussex ward and crime type are published. Also a
Sussex wide colour coded map providing an at-a-glance indication by area
of the most and least crime together with the 'crime rank' of each area.
Never before have such detailed crime statistics been readily available
to the public - check it out!
