Crime in the community

Since the Freedom of Information act was introduced, the public are now able to access detailed crime statistics for their local area for the first time.  Looking at the statistics over time reveals that this area is consistently a low crime area.  Hurstpierpoint and Ditchling both show a higher crime level (Ditchling records a high drug crime rate for instance), but still low by comparison with the three main Mid Sussex towns of East Grinstead, Haywards heath and Burgess Hill which in turn are low compared with the major coastal towns (Worthing, Brighton, Eastbourne).

Mid Sussex has the second lowest crime rate in West Sussex, 61% of the national average - and it's dropping still.

CrimeMapper
Sussex Police now provide up-to-date information on crime levels in the area using the crimemapper tool.  Searchable local crime statistics to street level are provided using a drag and zoom interactive map in the right pane which updates the crime stats information in the left pane.  A breakdown by crime types - burglary, anti-social behaviour, robbery, vehicle crime, violent crime and other crime - is available.  Quick link: check the Hassocks area crime map.

Crime data is sorted by Sussex Police and the local Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP).  The British Crime Survey (BCS) records crime rates by 10 incident types: violence, murder, offensive weapons, robbery, domestic burglary, drug offences, vehicle crime, sex offences, criminal damage, firearms.
