Messages from Emma Collett,
Hassocks PCSO... [
]
I hope everyone has survived the dreadful weather that
we have been experiencing lately? I have met a few wet residents
on my patrols! My first couple of surgeries at the South Downs
Nurseries have been productive with an increased attendance. The
date for my next surgery is posted on the news
page. Please feel free to pop along with any concerns or
questions you may have.
We have had several new NHW reinstatements and new
schemes start recently. We welcome Tony Chaitow of Ann Close,
Cecelia Norburn of Queens Drive, Bert Budgen of Meadows, Murray Thomson
of Challow Close and Lyn Godfrey of Mackie Avenue to Hassocks
Neighbourhood Watch. We are also in the process of reinstating
the schemes in Kings Drive and Chancellors Park.
We are still keen for volunteers to come forward to take
over several schemes which will close if a coordinator is not found
soon. These include Semley Road, Highlands Close and Willowbrook
Way. If you are interested in becoming a coordinator, please
contact Bruce Burgess or myself for further information.
I look forward to seeing you out and about on patrol
over the coming weeks.
The latest developments from the Hassocks Neighbourhood Panel is carried in a
feature on the news page.

Hassocks Main Coordinator... [

We now have a UV torch and markers pens for all NHW
members in Hassocks, Keymer and Clayton to borrow to mark items such as
TVs, cameras, DVD players, PCs and microwaves etc. [any item attractive
to a burglar] - see crime prevention advice
page for details on using. I suggest the street coordinators
arrange to borrow the kit from me for a returnable deposit of £5 for a
10 day period and suggest a voluntary donation of 50p per household to
cover batteries and pens. There is an informative pamphlet 'Coded
for Keeps' available from Burgess Hill Police Station or PCSOs.
Our own NHW website hassocksnhw.org.uk had 15880 'views'
in 2009 - that is an average of 44 per day, an increase of more than
20% on 2008! Not only are they local but I have received emails
from as far as Ipswich singing our praises and linking our website to
theirs. Why not have a good look around the site or pass on any
info to our scheme members? It is all free.
Also free - access to booklets, stickers and info cards
on a variety of subjects such as scams, safety and security for a
selection of items including antiques, cash and humans - from your
street coordinator, your main coordinator [me, Bruce -
or phone on 843821], our PCSO
Emma [above] or visit Burgess Hill Police Station. A useful one
is a fluorescent red windscreen card stating 'Don't bother-this vehicle
has been emptied'. I am still working on a comprehensive list of
such publications from the Home Office, Sussex Police, MSDC and Trading
Standards.
Finally, please see the bogus
page for police advice to the elderly when dealing with cold callers at
the door. Anyone who has been approached in their homes by bogus
police officers is asked to contact Sussex Police via 0845 60 70 999 or
Crimestoppers
free on 0800 555111 - you don't have to leave your name. Please
can street coordinators pass the above advice to our members.
General Messages...
Ringmaster may be no more, and the new police messaging
system a long time coming, but coordinators are reminded that the
latest crime alerts can still be obtained from the blog and RSS feed (above).
2006's report reviewing Neighbourhood Watch working with
Sussex Police can be downloaded below:
Note: This has been unavailable for some
time from the Sussex Police Authority's website, apologies if you tried
to download this previously and got nowhere. We've now changed the link
and download location and it should now work. Thanks to T. Shields for
pointing out the error.

Watch Out editions
Current and recent previous editions are carried on the
Hassocks NHW website, the web address (URL) is: www.hassocksnhw.org.uk/watchout
Messages from the webmaster...
The site's RSS Newsfeed and blog was launched at the end of September
2006. Please see the What is RSS? page for
details (now updated to reflect current status).
RSS technology is now mainstream for the rapid
distribution of information electronically, helped on by the release of
Internet Explorer 7 which has an integrated RSS reader, as do many
other leading web browsers.
A number of national NHW and related websites have
chosen to syndicate the feed from this site, thus allowing them to
provide current crime alert messages on their site without any manual
updating overhead.

from Geoff Coe... [

Geoff has now retired as MSNHWA Chairman. The
appointment of a replacement is awaited.
The spring issue of Watch Out has now gone to print and
should be delivered to Haywards Heath police station and onwards to the
other two police stations during the week of 15th March. Delivery
to NHW schemes will be undertaken soon after; it is important that
arrangements are actioned for delivery by individual coordinators to
households in the road covered without delay.
It is vital that both the local PCSO and the lead
coordinators are agreed about the necessary arrangements and
numbers. A copy of the report, drawn up in October 2008 has been
sent out and remains valid. This can also be viewed
below.
The North Downs NHW is bringing together coordinators
from Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex at a major Conference at Slaugham
Manor, the Sussex Police Conference and Training Centre, on Saturday
15th May starting 9.45am. The key speakers are: Chief
Superintendent Martin Walker, WSCC Leader C.C. Henry Smith, District
Crown Prosecutor Mark Bishop, Sgt. James Makepeace of Horsham police
and we also hope to have a senior Fire Service Officer. All the
speakers will join together to participate in a question and answer
session. Sussex Police Authority members will be in attendance
and the West Sussex High Sheriff Elizabeth Bennett has also accepted
our invitation.
Application forms will be sent to coordinators in April
and an early response is advised as it is expected to be popular; the
140 places will be confirmed with a copy of the Agenda on a first come
basis. Please advise your fellow coordinators.
The new communication system, promised some two years
ago, is now partly in operation. Known as 'Broadcast' (I think)
it is intended to allow contact with all co-ordinators or a selection
as appropriate.
I would be glad to receive a brief note how you feel
current working is operating with your NPT and PCSOs as I do hear mixed
reports [
].
A year ago we conducted a survey of views with a short questionnaire
which was quite revealing - almost everyone who replied felt that
workings had deteriorated since the CPCs days. Past working
relationships will not return due to financial cut-backs, however we
can still try to secure closer links with PCSOs and NPT lead Sergeants
as they are our key NHW contact interface.
You may have received a copy of a message titled 'My
Neighbourhood Watch Briefing - Issue 6 - December 2009'. This has
become a regular Home Office document aimed at NHW and Home Watch
schemes throughout the country giving current information on aspects of
crime prevention and community safety. It is worth getting it
sent - you can sign in at: www.mynhw.co.uk/register.php The previous
issue is available at: www.mynhw.co.uk/newsletter5.html
Watch Out delivery
As this publication incurs production costs from the public funds
grant, it is imperative that this newsletter should not be prejudiced
by delivery failures. Therefore a guidance note has been
developed setting out the points relevant to 'first tier' distribution
- collection from police stations or PCSO delivery. Please click the
link above to view.
To assist with coordinator recruitment we have now
published a handy leaflet to give out to interested people. It
gives basic information about Mid Sussex NHW and how to join and can be
downloaded below, or printed copies are available from police stations
or PCSOs. We are grateful to Mid Sussex Police for contributing
to publication costs.

Members Handbook
Can be downloaded (in either PDF or ZIP format) from the news page.
The form below can be used by coordinators to post
messages on this page, or submit corrections/updates to site pages:
Extranet
Coordinators can register on Extranet, part of the West Sussex Trading Standards site, designed to
give practitioners specialist information.
